Blombos Cave engravings, in sub-Saharan Africa, are dated to circa 70,000 BCE and consist of two pieces of ochre stone with geometric designs and some beads made from shells. La Ferrassie cave petroglyphs in south-western France are thought to be from around 60,000 BCE.
