Painting the Dao
7 acknowledgements T he artist would l ike to thank all those who have encouraged and supported him for nearly half a century, and the galleries who have presented his works to the public, including Rasti Fine Art (Hong Kong), Ping Art (Taipei), K. Y. Ng (Hong Kong), who exhibited his collection of my paintings at the Hong Kong Arts Centre in 2022, Zeng Fangang of Yi- yuan Space (Wuhan), Zeng Fanzhi and his curator Gladys Chung, who helped to organise the recent one-man exhibition at the Qintai Art Museum in Wuhan, James Lally of J. J. Lally & Co. (New York), Nicolas Chow, Worldwide Head of Asian Art at Sotheby’s, Asaph Hyman, Global Head of Chinese Ceramics &Works of Art at Bonhams, who generously offered to host the present exhibition, Edward Luper, also of Bonhams, and Emily de Wolf Pettit of Peking Art Associates (Beijing). He is also grateful to Joan Stanley-Baker for her long-standing friendship and for her article in this catalogue, to Prof. Tong Hoi-chiu, former curator of Chinese paintings at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, who has included the artist’s works in several exhibitions of Hong Kong ink art, and to the many collectors who have spread his paintings around the world. Peter Suart has, in his usual impeccable and alarmingly efficient manner, taken the burden of editing, designing and producing the catalogue off the artist’s hands. He has been his literary guardian for many years and is the only editor he has ever had whom he did not at some point harbour dreams of throttling. He also kindly wrote the brief and arcane text in the style of the artist’s painting inscriptions that appears here, which, in common with those, is best approached at a tangent. ak8.113 64–5
